Dr. Billy Sveen (he/him) is a pediatric critical care doctor and bioethicist dedicated to the ethical challenges surrounding life-sustaining medical technology. His research focuses on the decision-making process for tracheostomies and long-term ventilation in children, helping families decide whether this technology benefits the child and or if the burdens outweigh the benefits. These decisions can be emotional and challenging since the alternative is often hospice and end-of-life care. Billy is committed to supporting families in making informed decisions that align with their values and enhance the well-being of both the children and their families.
Beyond his work on tracheostomies, Dr. Sveen has a broad range of academic interests, including chronic critical illness, brain death, end-of-life decision-making, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in medicine. He is also passionate about animal ethics and welfare, integrating these concerns into his broader ethical inquiry.
